What is a slip pocket?
Slip pocket is a pocket with open top. You can slip things in/out easily.
Side to Side pocket
This is my favorite version of the slip pocket.
- Cut 2 pieces which are as wide as the bag. Shape is the same as the bag piece I plan to sew on or rectangle.Top of the pocket is always straight.
- Put them right side together
- Sew them together on the top and bottom edges
- Turn it right side out.
- Topstitch on the fold.
- Place it on where the instructions say
- Basting it on the sides in the seam allowance.
- Sew the bottom of the pocket onto the bag piece
- Make divider line if you would like to
- Done! 🙂
Sew-on slip pocket.
It is similar to the Side-to-Side pocket but not as wide. For this version it is not enough to sew the top and bottom sides only but all the four needs to be done in the following way:
- Put them right side together
- Sew all the four sides together but keep a hole on one side (I prefer the bottom edge)
- Turn right side out through the hole
- Topstitch all around the 4 sides
- Place it on the bag and sew three sides on it. Keep the top of it open
- Make divider line if you would like to
- Done! 🙂
Divider line
Divider line is to make two or more smaller pocket instead of one big. It can fit to mobile phone or just a pen. It is really up to you.
My favorite divider line is sewing 2 parallel lines very close to each other. It is strengthen the stitches and make the pocket more durable.
Vinyl/Leather Overlay
If you would like to make a more professional look, you can add a vinyl or leather overlay on the top of the pocket.
Steps for Side-to-Side slip pocket:
- Place the pocket pieces right sides together
- Sew them together on the top side (this will be the top of the pocket where it is open)
- Open it up
- Place a 1″ (2.5cm) wide vinyl/leather strap on the sewing line on the right side of the fabric. Middle of the strap must match with the stitch line. Wrong side of the strap is facing on the right side of the pocket pieces.
- Sew the strap on both long sides to the pocket pieces as close to the edge as you can
- Fold it in half
- Topstitch on the strap as close to the folding line as you can
- Place it on where the instructions say
- Basting it on the sides in the seam allowance.
- Sew the bottom of the pocket onto the bag piece
- Make divider line if you would like to.
- Done! 🙂
